Students Launch Campus Sustainability Initiative

A student-led environmental task force has implemented a comprehensive sustainability initiative that has already reduced campus waste by 40% and established Meridian as a leader in school environmental stewardship.

The Green Team, founded by juniors Emma Rodriguez and Noah Kim, conducted a thorough audit of campus operations and identified key areas for improvement: waste management, energy consumption, and water usage.

Working with school administrators, they introduced a three-stream recycling system, eliminated single-use plastics from the cafeteria, and established a composting program that diverts food waste from landfills. The compost now enriches the school's garden beds, where students grow vegetables donated to the local food bank.

"We wanted to move beyond awareness to actual impact," Emma explained. "Every student can participate in making our school more sustainable."

The team also installed solar panels on the science building, implemented LED lighting throughout campus, and upgraded windows in older buildings for better insulation. These changes are projected to reduce energy costs by 25% annually.

Science teacher Dr. Lisa Martinez, the faculty advisor, emphasized the educational value: "Students are learning environmental science by doing it. They're developing real-world solutions and seeing the direct impact of their efforts."
