The Meridian Art Gallery provides professional exhibition space where students showcase their creative work, engage with audiences, and experience their art in a gallery context that validates their artistic development and achievement.

Exhibition Programming Rotating exhibitions feature work from all grade levels and media including painting, sculpture, and photography.

The gallery hosts rotating exhibitions throughout the academic year featuring work from our visual arts program. Exhibition types include fall showcase of all student work, focused exhibitions by media (ceramics, photography, painting), themed shows organized around concepts or prompts, senior portfolio exhibitions for graduating students, and collaborative shows including community artists.

Each exhibition runs 4-6 weeks, with opening receptions where students present their work, discuss artistic process, and engage with viewers. These events build confidence in discussing artwork and help students develop presentation skills valuable beyond visual arts.

Curatorial Experience

Advanced students participate in curating exhibitions, gaining experience in selecting work, designing exhibition layouts, writing wall text and interpretive materials, planning opening receptions, and marketing and promotion. This curatorial work provides insight into art administration and exhibition design, valuable for students considering careers in museums, galleries, or arts organizations.

Students learn that presenting art involves decisions about placement, lighting, sequence, interpretation, and audience engagement—developing critical thinking about how context shapes viewing experiences.

Community Access

The gallery is open during school hours and during special events and opening receptions. Community members are welcome to visit, and we encourage families to bring friends to see student work. The gallery serves as a bridge between school and community, demonstrating student learning in tangible form and enriching Portland's arts ecosystem.

Local businesses, community centers, and coffee shops often feature additional student work through partnerships coordinated with gallery programming. This extended reach gives students broader audiences and validates their creative work.

Integration with Learning

Gallery exhibitions connect to learning throughout our programs. Middle school students see what's possible as they view upper school work. All students learn to view art critically, write about visual work thoughtfully, and understand exhibition design decisions.

Classes from other subjects visit exhibitions, connecting visual art to history, literature, science, and social studies. This integration reinforces our belief that arts are central to complete education, not peripheral extras.

Supporting Student Artists

The gallery validates student creativity through professional presentation, provides exhibition experience valuable for college portfolios, builds confidence in sharing creative work publicly, creates lasting documentation of student achievement, and celebrates artistic growth across all skill levels.

Financial assistance ensures cost doesn't prevent students from matting, framing, or presenting work professionally. Our campus facilities include the gallery as part of our commitment to excellent arts education.
