The Meridian Theater Department's production of "In the Heights" brought Lin-Manuel Miranda's vibrant musical to life, celebrating community, dreams, and cultural identity through powerful performances and creative staging.
Director Sarah Chen chose this challenging musical specifically for its themes of belonging and heritage. "Our diverse student body connected deeply with these characters and their stories," she explained. "The production became a celebration of our own multicultural community."
Senior Gabriela Morales delivered a stunning performance as Nina, capturing both her character's ambition and internal conflicts with nuance and emotional honesty. Junior Marcus Thompson's portrayal of Benny showcased his powerful vocals and natural stage presence.
The ensemble numbers featured intricate choreography by student dance captain Maya Patel, blending traditional Latin dance styles with contemporary movement. The technical crew, led by junior stage manager James Liu, created transformative lighting and sound that transported audiences to Washington Heights.
"What impressed me most was how the students made this story their own," said parent volunteer coordinator Linda Martinez. "They honored the original while bringing their own experiences and perspectives to these characters."
All four performances sold out, raising over $8,000 for the theater program. Plans are already underway for next year's spring musical.
