Meridian's middle school debate team emerged victorious at the Regional Middle School Debate Championship, competing against 32 teams from across the state in a weekend of rigorous intellectual competition.
Eighth-graders Aisha Johnson and Marcus Chen won the varsity division championship, remaining undefeated through six preliminary rounds and three elimination debates. Their final round argument on renewable energy policy demonstrated sophisticated research, logical reasoning, and persuasive speaking skills.

"Preparing for debates taught me to see multiple perspectives and build strong arguments with evidence," Aisha explained. "These skills help me in all my classes, not just debate."
The novice division team of seventh-graders Emma Liu and David Park earned third place, an impressive achievement for first-year debaters. Their performance on healthcare policy topics showed maturity beyond their years.
Debate coach and English teacher Mr. James Thompson emphasized the program's educational value: "Debate develops critical thinking, research skills, public speaking ability, and intellectual confidence. Students learn to engage with complex ideas and express their thoughts clearly and persuasively."
The team now advances to the state championship next month, where they'll compete for a spot at nationals. The debate program, in only its third year, has quickly established Meridian as a competitive force in academic competition.
