Meridian students devoted over 2,000 volunteer hours during this year's Community Service Week, partnering with local organizations to address pressing community needs.
Middle school students worked with the Community Food Bank, sorting and distributing food to families in need. "Seeing how many families rely on this service was eye-opening," said seventh-grader David Park. "It motivated me to continue volunteering year-round."
High school students split into teams focusing on different initiatives: environmental restoration at Riverside Park, tutoring elementary students at the local library, and assisting at the senior center. The environmental team planted 300 native trees and removed several tons of invasive species.
A group of seniors organized a technology workshop for older adults, teaching smartphone basics and online safety. Participant Margaret Wilson, 78, expressed gratitude: "These young people were so patient and kind. Now I can video chat with my grandchildren across the country!"
Service Learning Coordinator James Liu emphasized the educational value: "Service learning connects classroom knowledge to real-world challenges. Students develop empathy, leadership skills, and a deeper understanding of civic responsibility."
