In a thrilling finale to an undefeated season, Meridian's varsity girls soccer team captured the state championship with a 2-1 victory over rival Westbrook Academy.
Senior captain Isabella Torres scored both goals, including the game-winner in the final minutes of regulation play. "This team has worked incredibly hard all season," Torres said after the match. "We believed in each other, and that made all the difference."
The championship caps a remarkable season that saw the team post a 18-0-2 record and outscore opponents 67-12. Under the leadership of Head Coach Maria Santos, the team has emphasized skill development, tactical awareness, and collaborative play.
"What makes this team special isn't just their athletic ability—it's their character," Coach Santos explained. "They support each other on and off the field, and they've shown our entire school community what dedication and teamwork can accomplish."
Five team members have already received scholarship offers from Division I and II programs, with recruiting continuing for several juniors. The state championship represents the program's first title and establishes Meridian as a rising force in competitive high school athletics.
