Dr. Michelle Chang, Meridian Class of 2010, recently became the youngest pediatric surgeon at Stanford Children's Hospital, a remarkable achievement that reflects both her exceptional abilities and the strong foundation she built during her years at Meridian.
"Meridian taught me to think critically, ask meaningful questions, and believe I could make a difference," Dr. Chang shared during a recent visit to campus. "Those lessons guided me through college, medical school, and my residency."
At Meridian, Michelle excelled academically while also playing varsity soccer and participating in theater. She credits her science teachers, particularly Dr. Robert Martinez, with sparking her interest in medicine through hands-on laboratory experiences and mentorship.
"Dr. Martinez saw potential in me before I saw it in myself," she recalled. "He encouraged me to pursue challenging research opportunities and helped me believe I belonged in medicine."
Now Dr. Chang mentors medical students and residents, passing forward the support she received. She also speaks at schools, encouraging young women and underrepresented minorities to pursue careers in medicine and STEM fields.
During her campus visit, she addressed current students about the importance of resilience, finding mentors, and staying true to one's values. "Success isn't just about grades or achievements," she told them. "It's about making a positive impact and helping others along the way."
